Updates: Israel's war on Gaza continues

The office of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced an "immediate ceasefire" in Sweida on Saturday as interior ministry forces deployed in the Druze-majority province under a US-brokered deal with Israel.

The presidency called on "all parties to fully respect" the truce, that came after Israel bombed defence ministry forces which had deployed to the southern province earlier this week to force their withdrawal.

Israel and Syria have agreed to a ceasefire, the US envoy to Turkey said on Friday, after days of bloodshed in the predominantly Druze area that has killed over 300 people.

On Wednesday, Israel launched airstrikes in Damascus and hit government forces in the south, demanding they withdraw and saying that Israel aimed to protect Syrian Druze - part of a small but influential minority that also has members in Lebanon and Israel.

Critical food shortages in Gaza are pushing the overwhelmed healthcare system closer to collapse, as starving Palestinians pour into hospitals, reported Al Jazeera.

The Palestinian Health Ministry is warning that unprecedented numbers of people are arriving malnourished and suffering from extreme exhaustion and memory loss.

 Israel has declined to renew the visa for Jonathan Whittall, the senior UN aid official for the occupied Palestinian territories, a UN spokesperson said on Friday, adding there were intensifying threats of reduced access to suffering civilians.

Eri Kaneko, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said visas for UN staff were recently renewed for shorter periods than usual, and access requests to Gaza were denied for multiple agencies. 

Kaneko said permits for Palestinian staff to enter East Jerusalem were also withheld.

Another 10 hostages will be released from Gaza shortly, US President Donald Trump said on Friday, without providing additional details.

Trump commented during a dinner with lawmakers at the White House, lauding the efforts of his special envoy Steve Witkoff. Israeli and Hamas negotiators have been taking part in the latest round of ceasefire talks in Doha since July 6, discussing a US-backed proposal for a 60-day ceasefire.

"We got most of the hostages back. We're going to have another 10 coming very shortly, and we hope to have that finished quickly," Trump said.

Trump has been predicting for weeks that a ceasefire and hostage-release deal were imminent, but agreement has proven elusive.

The missile fired from Yemen has been intercepted by the Israeli Air Force, Al Jazeera reported, citing local Israeli media. 

Sirens had been activated in several parts of the country once the launch was detected.
